 THE Orthodox Church
Icons in.......
*An  icon  is a picture or “writing” of the Church.  Icons can be of  Christ Himself, The Virgin Mary, the Saints,, or even events in the life of the Church.  They actually are a type of writing that defines the doctrine of the Church while beautifying at the same time.  They give a timeless sense of presence of the living God.

*Icons developed along side of Scripture and agree with Holy Scripture.

*Icons are mostly about incarnational theology . (Christ was a real human Who came to dwell with mankind”    They have been found in the Church since the second century.  Tradition has it that St. Luke himself was the first Monographer.

*Icons are not Idols which are banned in the ten commandments.  Go to almost any Jewish synagogue and you will see that  pictures adorn the walls of most synagogues.   The early Jewish temple itself had images of the Cherubim and seraphim.  What is banned is an image of what cannot be seen or an image in relief like a statue or 3 dimensional picture.

*Ever since the incarnation of God in the flesh, a war has been raging concerning the incarnation.  Most Christian heresy arises over the doctrine of God becoming flesh..  Under the influence of Islam, many of the Icons were destroyed and banned.  The Church eventually restored the Icons and declared that they were not just optional, but necessary to guarantee the proper proclamation of God coming into the material world.

*Icons protect and provide a way to educate  and lead us upward toward God.

*Since God came in the flesh, he can be depicted in picture because of the statement such depiction makes.  Icons represent the place where Heaven intersects the earth........They remind us the “Kingdom is among us”.
